FAQs

  • During the first appointment, I will meet with just the parent or primary caregiver (without the child). This will allow time for me to gather history/information. This will also allow time for parents to speak openly without having to worry about their child overhearing sensitive information.

We will discuss family history, the child’s developmental history, current symptoms and behaviors, and my treatment approach. If we feel as though services are appropriate, we will schedule the next appointment to bring your child in to be furthered assessed. Based on this information, we will work together to develop goals and a plan for treatment.  I may make recommendations for further services.

  • If possible, please bring the following information (if appropriate). Paper or electronic information is fine to bring.

    • Previous evaluations or assessments (psychological evaluations, occupational therapy, speech etc.)

    • Provider List (names, address, and phone numbers of current and previous providers (previous mental health providers, pediatrician, medical providers, psychiatrist, occupational therapy, speech, naturopathic doctors etc.)

    • Medication list (names, dosages, dates of current and previous psychotropic medications)

  • Sessions with children consist of various forms of play therapy.  This includes but is not limited to:

    • Expression through toys (puppets, doll house, figurines etc.)

    • Sand

    •   Art

While a lot of people think of therapy as sit down and talking, play therapy is best for when children are not able or ready to express emotions and experiences verbally.

It’s ok if you child comes in and does not talk. It is ok if your child comes in and makes a mess of my whole office. It is ok for your child to communicate with me what is going on inside of them There will be no judgement what at all.

Parent consultations are held regularly in order to support parents with home-based interventions and parenting strategies

  • Sessions will typically run for about 55 minutes. Changes to session time must be discussed in advance.

  • Overall, information shared in therapy is confidential.  Information may only be released with a release of information.  Exceptions include:

    • Suspected child abuse or elder abuse (including neglect, domestic violence, physical or sexual abuse)

    • If a client intends to harm self or others

    •   If a client is threatening serious bodily harm to another person

    • A judge may subpoena records or therapist testimony

Every session, I do try and save the last 5 minutes to discuss with parents/caregivers themes that emerged (feelings, coping skills) but nothing in depth or that would break confidentiality.

  • Yes.  I require both parents to sign written consent to services.  Exceptions may be made in the event that one parent is absent due to abandonment or military service.  I am happy to talk with you about your circumstances.

Please note that I do not provide services to children and families who have ongoing custody cases in court.  I do not provide court reports, court testimony, custody evaluations or mediation.  I also do not provide letters for emotional support animals.
